Mathematics Standards

The world and the workplace are changing rapidly.  We now work with computers and other technologies that weren't even around when most of us were in school.  To help your child prepare for tomorrow's world, instructional goals for mathematics must reflect the needs of the 21st century.  Our children will be faced with finding employment in a highly technological world.  Mathematics is the key for success in these jobs, but it may not look like the math you did in school.  Memorization and skill drills made up the majority of math instruction in the past, but tomorrow's jobs will require students to be prepared to work with new ideas, to understand patterns, and to solve complex problems in unconventional ways.  Students will need to transfer their mathematical knowledge to real life situations.  As future employees, parents, and citizens living in a democratic society, students will be required to make mathematical decisions, whether it be to compare loans, to plan busy family schedules, or to double a recipe.

The Bakersfield City School District is helping your child meet the mathematical challenge of tomorrow by providing our students with a strong math curriculum which balances basic facts, problem solving, and critical skills.  The standards, listed by grade below, will help you find a list of important skills and concepts introduced and developed at each grade level. In the early grades, children will develop concepts of numbers, patterns, measurement, geometry, and probability.

Older children will be continually challenged to reach further as they apply and expand these basic concepts to real world situations.
